The great Chicago bluesman, Luther Allison, lived by a simple philosophy that he loved to share (“Leave your ego, play the music, love the people”). Now, twenty-three years after Luther’s passing, the great man would surely be delighted to hear Bernard Allison’s Songs From The Road, and proud that his ferociously talented son is sworn to accomplish the same mission, to bring infused, all-encompassing blues to the audience that needs it more than ever.
“I actually prefer live performances,” Bernard says, “because you can communicate and interact with the audience. I basically feed off that energy, combined with the talent and personalities of my band.”
You may know the songs – but you don’t know these interpretations. With Bernard leading the lineup on vocals and a blazing lead guitar, backed by Dylan Salfer (guitar), George Moye (bass), Mario Dawson (drums) and José James (sax/percussion), this is a live band whose chemistry allows them to stretch and shake up these classic songs. “Fans who know our song choices will notice the change in arrangements that highlight my current band members,” Bernard says. “As opposed to hearing the studio versions, which usually feature my vocals and guitar. We are the Bernard Allison Group and we show our unity night after night around the world. It’s ‘the Allison way’…”
The result is a glorious exchange of energy between band and audience – and proof that Luther’s old philosophy burns brighter than ever. “Our shows are not like going to the movies and staring at the big screen,” Bernard believes. “We’re there for people to enjoy each other’s stories for the evening.”
