What does the Coronavirus mean for the Wijk Blues Week?
A few weeks ago, few people foresaw that public life in the Netherlands would come to a virtual standstill because of a health crisis. Working from home, avoiding large concentrations of people and banning gatherings of 100 or more people are the motto. In addition, experts expect a strong increase of the number of Corona patients in the coming days/weeks and it is expected that the measures will be even stricter than the restrictions already announced until March 31.
For the Wijkse Blues Week in the first week of April, with six events of 100 to 250 visitors at a time in relatively small venues, this is expected to mean that continuation will not be an option.
In our opinion, this will result in a health risk that will be too high, while the number of visitors will be so low that it will become a financial fiasco.
In the coming days, we will discuss the matter with the co-organisers (schools, theatre, film house and catering industry) and on Tuesday evening, 17 March, we will make a final decision, which we will communicate.
From Tuesday, March 31 through Sunday, April 5, we organise a new, unique blues project in Wijk bij Duurstede, together with several primary schools, the Filmhuis, the catering industry, Theatre Calypso and prominent figures from Wijk. Six days of blues with a special programme, for young and old, something for everyone.

On 31 March and 1 April school concerts in primary schools de Wegwijzer (location de Zonnewijzer) and de Horn (location Kompas). Approx. 250 pupils from groups 6, 7 and 8 can enjoy Blues4Kids, A school concert for children developed by Big Bo Brocken and Vera van Faassen. They have succeeded in conveying the origin of the blues, the Mecca of music, to children in a comprehensible and captivating way. Previous performances in the country were received so enthusiastically that we did not want to withhold this from our schoolchildren in Wijk. The concerts are only accessible for schoolchildren and their teachers.
