Friday, April 24, 2009, BluesinWijk launched their first blues event in Café Ome Ko. Two months later, the square at the Castle Park filled up with hundreds of blues lovers and closed the year with over 150 friends and a dozen sponsors. Founders Anton Winkel, Frans Hoving and Arie Verheul soon became known as the ‘Wijkse Bluesmen’ and they saw the opportunity to continue the success of the first year.
and make blues in Wijk bij Duurstede a great success. Last 10 years they invited over 300 blues bands from Holland, Belgium, UK, USA, Canada, Finland, Australia, -Africa and Austria to come and play in Wijk. Theatre Calypso became their home base, but there was also blues at Castle Duurstede, on cruise ship Salvinia over the Lek, in pubs, on outdoor stages, in the E&E Gasthuis and in living rooms. Not only in Wijk, but also Cothen and Langbroek were not forgotten. Furthermore, they organised workshops, blues films, lectures, photo exhibitions, blues quizzes and blues walks, brought blues to the school, published a photo book and a blues newspaper, brought blues dancing to Wijk, facilitated Wijk blues bands, had a real mouth harmonica orchestra, won a regional culture award in 2010 and the Wijk volunteer award in 2016.
